NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Union Township Supervisors expect to hire a new police officer within three weeks.
Supervisor Kevin Guinaugh said at Thursday's supervisors meeting that if a special meeting is not called for the hiring, it will take place at the December meeting.
A township resident complained that she recently called township police to report a group of youths causing trouble, and was surprised to find the officer on duty was backed up on calls.
Secretary-Treasurer Sally Byler said the officers work alone on a shift. Supervisor Steve Galizia said the hiring of an additional officer will make it possible to put two officers on some shifts.
The township has two full time officers and three part-timers.
In other business, Guinaugh announced the detour route to be used when the Covert's Crossing Bridge closes for construction of a new bridge. He said work is expected to start Nov. 18.
Motorists will have to cross the Mahoning River by taking Covert Road to U.S. Route 224 west to Edinburg, then south on Pa. Route 551.
Supervisors honored Eileen Shuler for 25 years of running the surplus food program for the township. She also received citations from the governor and the Lawrence County commissioners.
