LISBON -- Junior Jake Robinson, a tailback and part-time quarterback for two seasons at Beaver Local High, injured his shoulder in the Beavers' 33-18 victory over University School in last week's Division III regional semifinal game.
Still, Coach Rich Wright said he'll start Robinson at quarterback when the Beavers (10-2) go against Cleveland Benedictine (10-2) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Canton Central Catholic Stadium.
Derek Smith, a senior signal-caller sidelined with a broken collarbone since week nine when Beaver Local upended Wellsville 44-8, could see some action along with sophomore Steve Mercer.
If Smith, who practiced for the first time Wednesday plays, it's likely that Robinson, who has rushed for more than 700 plus this season, will be at tailback.
Jordan Williams, a senior fullback, is the team's leading rusher with more than 1,000 yards.
"Robinson is a great athlete and we'll have to see how his shoulder holds up," Wright said. "He might play some tailback and receiver, but he won't play defense.
"Robinson is our big playmaker and has scored more touchdowns then anyone on our team," Wright said. "Our offensive line is the key, because we run the ball a lot."
Cleared to play
Wright said Robinson practiced every day this week and has been cleared to play, but is still sore. Smith has been medically cleared and has appeared OK in practice sessions.
"Benedictine has great tradition. We know we have a great challenge and it's a step we want to take," Wright said.
In the win over University School, Robinson rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown before being hurt. He was replaced by Mercer, who threw a TD pass in the fourth quarter. Williams gained 121 yards and scored twice.
In Beaver Local's victory over Edison two weeks ago, Robinson threw a 28-yard TD pass to Josh Pastore and Williams rushed for 134 yards on 22 carries.
The Beavers, 2-2 in three playoff appearances, face a Benedictine program that has 13 playoff appearances and four state titles, the last one in 1996.
