CHAMPION State patrol investigates accident

CHAMPION -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that sent a township police officer and a Bristolville man to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Officer Jamie Nehrenz and Christan K. Roberts, 21, North Park Extension, were both treated at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Police Chief Dennis Steinbeck said.
OSHP reports say Nehrenz was patrolling on State Road around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when a vehicle pulled out of a driveway and almost struck the cruiser.
Nehrenz noticed the vehicle, a white Ford Explorer, moving erratically and recklessly and attempted to stop the vehicle, said Police Chief Dennis Steinbeck.
"Patrol Officer Nehrenz tried to get the vehicle, driven by Roberts, to stop, but Roberts continued to drive recklessly and struck another vehicle," Steinbeck said. "Nehrenz tried to get the vehicle to stop again, when Robert's swerved and knocked the cruiser into a ditch. The Explorer also lost control and ended up in the ditch."
OSHP was called by Champion police to investigate the crash, Steinbeck said.
Roberts is in Trumbull County Jail on charges of failing to comply with order or signal of a police officer and reckless driving, Steinbeck said. Roberts is expected in municipal court later today to answer the charges, police said.
