HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Weather permitting, work will start Jan. 1 on the second phase of the township waterline.
Poncho Exposito, Mahoning Township Supervisors chairman, told the board Tuesday that the Pennsylvania American Water Co. has let the project out for bids.
He said that waterline installation will start on the township roads, with the U.S. Route 224 portion coming later.
The $4.5 million waterline will include 58,000 feet to be installed in Union and Mahoning townships.
Areas to be served in Mahoning Township include Matthews Road, U.S. Route 224, the north Edinburg area, Pa. Route 551 from U.S. Routes 224 to 422 and the area from the intersection of U.S. Route 551 from U.S. Route 422 east to New Castle.
In Union township, waterlines will be installed from lines to Harbor-Pulaski Road.
Also Tuesday, supervisors approved an application for $173,000 fiscal year 2002 Community Development Block Grant funds, which will be used to provide financial assistance to residents who will hook onto the waterline to be built next year.
Street numbers
In other business, Exposito said the fire department has received 200 orders so far for street numbers.
The department is making numbers and signs available to residents at cost so they can comply with the new street numbering ordinance. Residents have been assigned house numbers for the first time in order to comply with the county's enhanced 911 system. The numbers can be ordered by calling the township office.
Exposito said the ordinance allows residents to put the numbers on their mailboxes only if they are in front of their house on the same side of the street and the only mailbox there.
Solicitor Thomas Leslie reported he tried unsuccessfully to contact AT & amp;T over cable coverage for Butch Estates, and has written to the Federal Communications Commission for assistance. Residents there want cable television service but AT & amp;T has claimed extending the service to the development is too expensive.
Exposito said the fire department will hold a fund-raising NASCAR party beginning at noon Sunday. Roast beef and ham sandwiches will be served and tickets are available at the door.
