VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
POLAND -- It sounds like a perfect fit.
Kristy Gaudiose, a senior guard for the Poland High girls basketball team, was to fax her national letter of intent today to continue her career with Youngstown State.
"I really enjoyed the [YSU] coaches and the teammates," said Gaudiose. "The girls are awesome. They are so nice."
Known for her athletic ability and shooting range, the 5-foot-6 Gaudiose has been named to All-Ohio, All-District and All-Metro Athletic Conference teams.
She holds Poland's single-game scoring mark (36) and twice set the record for free throws, making 14-of-15 attempts. She made 50 3-point goals last season while averaging 17 points per game for the Bulldogs.
Gaudiose carries a 3.70 GPA and attracted interest from South Alabama, Akron, Central Michigan and Miami of Ohio.
"I'm glad to play here. My family will be able to see me play," Gaudiose said of the decision.
Volleyball
Two of the best volleyball players to come out of the Mahoning Valley will sign with Division I colleges today.
Girard senior Tealle Hunkus has committed to Duke University, while Hubbard senior Katy Jo Mroski has committed to Indiana University.
A 6-foot-1 middle hitter, Hunkus led the Indians (25-4) to the Div. III state tournament where they lost in the semifinals to Sidney Lehman.
Against Lehman, Hunkus had 29 kills and became one of only four players in Ohio to eclipse 1,000 career kills. She added 19 digs in the semifinal.
Behind Mroski, a 6-2 middle hitter, Hubbard (26-1) won its third straight district title and continued its dominance in the Trumbull Athletic Conference. The Eagles have gone 46-0 in the TAC over the past three years and are 77-5 overall.
In her career, Mroski, the three-time District 1 Player of the Year, recorded 1,085 kills, 144 aces and 164 blocks.
Baseball
Senior Mike Turjanica, a first baseman for the Canfield High baseball team, will sign to play at Youngstown State. He hit .405 with three home runs and 31 RBIs last season.
Golf
Warren JFK golfer Jason Kokrak will sign with Xavier University. He led the Eagles to back-to-back state titles in 2000 and 2001, winning medalist honors at state the past two seasons. JFK finished second as a team this season.
