COLUMBIANA COUNTY Pupils to show projects illustrating Ohio history

Pupils have been planning projects since the school year began.
LISBON -- Columbiana County pupils in the second through 12th grades will culminate a study of Ohio history with the annual fall fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
The Ohio Bicentennial is the theme for the event at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center.
Vaughn Musser, a coordinator of gifted pupils at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, said about 500 people usually attend the annual event. The fall fair was originally limited to gifted pupils only, but pupils of any ability level now participate, Musser said.
She said various groups of pupils will have project areas ranging from creating three-dimensional models of Ohio landmarks to re-enacting important events in Ohio's history.
Musser said the pupils have been researching the various subjects and planning their projects since the beginning of the school year.
Some pupils have researched important people in Ohio's history and will portray a particular person. Pupils participating in this project will be in costumes appropriate to the period, Musser said.
Re-enactments
Another group of pupils will re-enact important events. The pupils wrote the script and created props and costumes. During the performance they will change one element of the actual historical account and show how they believe that change would have altered history.
One group researched issues currently affecting Ohio and wrote news or feature articles or editorials to explain the issue, their research findings and possible solutions or resolutions.
A group of art pupils took on the role of art designers and created a series of three stamps with Ohio bicentennial themes. Others researched various areas of Ohio and created tourism displays.
Besides Musser, coordinators of gifted pupils Judy Herron, Eleanor Allison from the service center and Laurie King from East Liverpool Schools organized the event.
Musser said visitors may also buy food prepared by parent volunteers. Proceeds from the food tables will help fund countywide programming for gifted and talented pupils.
