VOLLEYBALL Huron takes Division III title



Norwalk St. Paul, Kettering Alter and Cincinnati Ursuline also won their state championships.

DAYTON -- Sarah Wilber had 20 kills to lead Huron to the Division III state volleyball championship Saturday with a 15-11, 15-9 victory over Sidney Lehman Catholic.
Amy Gioffre had 13 digs and Amanda Fox and Megan Borgelt added 12 digs apiece for Huron (27-2), which won its only other state title in 1999.
Ashley Newcomer had 17 kills and 13 digs to lead Sidney Lehman (23-7), which won the 2000 state crown.
Div. IV
Jordan Centers had 25 kills, including 14 in the decisive third match, as Norwalk St. Paul won its first state volleyball title with a 9-15, 15-13, 15-13 victory over Maria Stein Marion Local.
Centers added five digs and four blocks for St. Paul (29-0). Anne Gross added 14 kills and 11 digs, Kristen Playko had nine kills and 27 digs, and Angie Camp had 45 assists.
The second game was delayed for 12 minutes after referee Michael Rouse fainted. He walked off the court without assistance and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.
Hospital spokeswoman Maria Cosler said Rouse was in critical condition, but declined to discuss his ailment.
Erin Puthoff had 14 kills and 19 digs for Marion Local (26-3), which was making its first appearance in a state championship match.
Marion Local also got 14 kills, four digs and three blocks from Margo Moeller, and Marianne Wuebker added 12 kills and 21 digs.
Div. II
DAYTON -- Carrie DeMange had 14 kills and six digs as Kettering Alter beat Millersburg W. Holmes 15-1, 15-0 to win its first state championship.
DeMange made 14 kills in 17 attempts with no errors in a match that lasted just 33 minutes. Jeanna Miller added six kills and seven digs for the Lady Knights (26-3).
Tristen Dye had six kills and Lindsey Piar had four kills for West Holmes (28-1).
This was Alter's first trip to the state tournament. West Holmes had been to the tournament in three of the past four years, but this was their first final.
Div. I
Jeanna Staun had 15 kills and 18 digs and Carlie Reihman had 15 kills and 17 digs as Cincinnati Ursuline beat Cincinnati St. Ursula 11-15, 15-8, 15-13 to win its third Division I state volleyball championship.
The game was a rematch of last year's final which St. Ursula won. The Bulldogs have won seven state championships since 1993.
Kelly Burnes added 57 assists and 15 digs for the Lions, which also won state titles in 1975 and 1993.
Beth Gillming led St. Ursula with 16 kills and nine digs and four blocks. Beth Shelton had 15 kills and 11 digs and Bryn Kehoe added 49 assists, 11 digs and four blocks.
In the third game Ursuline jumped out to an 11-3 lead and led 14-8 before St. Ursula cut the lead to 14-13. Then Ursuline forced a sideout and picked up the win on a kill by Stephanie Blackburn.
