Playing singles game on radio
Q. Why can't you buy singles for all the songs you hear on the radio any more?
A. Pop music critic Glenn Gamboa responds: Because the record companies don't want you to. In the early '90s, the companies worried that people would simply buy the single to avoid paying for the whole, more-expensive album.
In a way, this plan backfired because music fans opted to download the single from the Internet rather than paying the $18 for a whole CD when they only wanted the one song. Record companies now see there's a market for the single, as the enormous sales for "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" single -- nearly 400,000 in two weeks -- have shown.
