DIV. III FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS Beaver Local runs away to date with Benedictine
The Beavers bottled up University School's highly touted quarterback, Jeff Terrell.
VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
BELOIT -- Some of Beaver Local High's fans brought noisemakers that sounded like a train horn to West Branch's Clinton Heacock Stadium. That was appropriate, because the Beavers' offense ran like a runaway locomotive.
Beaver Local rushed for 395 yards and forced University School quarterback Jeff Terrell, a Big Ten recruit, into two interceptions, to defeat the Preppers, 33-18, in Saturday's Division III, Region 9 semifinal.
The victory vaulted the Beavers (10-2) into the regional final, probably next Saturday, against Cleveland Benedictine (10-2), which defeated Steubenville 20-17 in triple overtime.
Rushing yardage
Quarterback Jake Robinson rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown, and Jordan Williams added 121 yards and two more scores.
"We want to run the ball; that's the way we like to do things," Beaver Local coach Rich Wright said. "The offensive line had a lot to say about that and our backs ran extremely hard.
"We were controlling the clock like we wanted to," Wright said. "We were getting the runs we needed to, but we couldn't put them away."
The victory was not without its toll, however.
Robinson suffered a shoulder injury and was replaced under center by Steve Mercer, who threw for a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Robinson did remain in the game as a safety.
More seriously, Josh Pastore was knocked unconscious while breaking up a pass late in the fourth quarter.
He was able to speak with trainers and coaches and moved his extremities, but Pastore was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for tests and observation.
Keying on Terrell
Defensively, the Beavers took their best shots against Terrell, who is being courted by Northwestern and Indiana.
Terrell completed 17-of-35 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also intercepted twice and was rushed heavily.
The Beavers sacked him seven times and Adam Hoppel was in the Preppers' backfield much of the night; he knocked Terrell out of the game momentarily in the second quarter.
"He was dangerous every time," said Wright of Terrell. "When he took a three-step drop we just couldn't get to him. So we tried to make him go down the field and the receivers made great catches."
Scoring
Robinson opened the scoring less than a minute into the game with a 49-yard run.
After the teams traded field goals, Terrell's 7-yard pass to Derrick Walter tied the score at 10 with 2:26 remaining in the second quarter.
Dave Kinsey's second field goal of the game, a 32-yarder, gave the Beavers the lead for good, 13-10, with 15 seconds remaining before halftime.
That's the way the score remained until the opening minute of the fourth quarter, on a 1-yard run by Jordan Williams. Terrell passed to Walter from the 6, but an interception set up Dan Kinsey's 16-yard pass from Mercer with 5:12 remaining in the game.
Jordan Williams scored on a 20-yard run with 2:24 remaining to close the scoring.
