Man's record expunged
YOUNGSTOWN -- A judge has expunged the record of a Selma Avenue man who was cleared of criminal charges. Haywood Pullen Jr., 52, was indicted in 1998 on a charge of felonious assault with a firearm specification. A jury acquitted him after a trial in March 2002. At Pullen's request, Judge Robert Lisotto of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ordered his record expunged and all court documents permanently sealed.
Ex-CAA workers sue
YOUNGSTOWN -- A lawsuit against the Community Action Agency of Columbiana County by four of its former employees has been moved to U.S. District Court in Youngstown.
The suit was originally filed in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court by Tori Hoperich of Lisbon, Crystal Jones of Leetonia, Carol Anne Campsey of Lisbon and Linda Beadnell of Salineville. They are suing the social services organization and its director, alleging they were fired without just cause. The women were administrators at the agency.
The suit says all were fired last spring after Hoperich, assisted by Jones, notified Director Carol Bretz of actions Hoperich believed violated agency regulations. The suit says Hoperich was fired in retaliation for that action. Jones was fired for seeking legal counsel, the others were fired because they're related to either Hoperich or Jones, the suit claims.
Paper turkey drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- Local Rite Aid stores are participating in a "paper turkey" fund-raising campaign for Second Harvest Food Bank, which provides food to agencies serving needy people. Customers buy the turkeys for a donation of $1, sign them, and hang them in the stores to encourage others to make similar donations. The campaign runs through Dec. 21. Last year, the program raised more than $200,000 for Second Harvest Food Banks in Ohio and Michigan.
A rise in COG dues
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Costs are going up and so are the dues for the Lawrence County Council of Governments. COG members agreed to increase their 2003 dues from 9 cents to 11 cents per person in a member municipality. The money is paid by the municipality through taxes. The increase will mean an extra $3,562.16 to the COG budget.
COG Executive Director Robert Callen had initially proposed a 1 cent increase, but members said they wouldn't mind spending more because they feel they get their dues back when making bulk purchases for items through the COG. "Some people have saved enough money to pay for three or four years of dues in salt alone," said Everett Bleakney, Wayne Township supervisor.
Callen said the extra money will help pay for increases in liability insurance and ensure the COG has money on hand for matching grants.
Trials due in shootings
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Trial dates for two city men accused in a September shooting that wounded a Youngstown man should be set within the next few months. Jermaine Wilson, 20, of Beech Street, and Brian Lee Payne, 18, of East Lincoln Avenue, both waived their rights to preliminary hearings Friday before District Justice Melissa Amodie. Wilson faces charges of criminal attempt to commit homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, eight counts of recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats and carrying a firearm without a license. Payne is charged with criminal conspiracy. Police accused the men in the Sept. 8 shooting of Michael Polite, 23, of Youngstown, and Donald Altman, 65, of New Castle. Police said the men attacked Polite inside the West Side Mini Mart and started shooting as he ran off. Polite was shot in the foot and Altman, a bystander, was shot in the back, police said. Payne and Wilson were taken back to the Lawrence County Jail on Friday after failing to post $200,000 bond each.
