WESTINGHOUSE
Cleanup plan
The Environmental Protection Agency has announced a proposed plan for cleaning up contaminants that have migrated from the former Westinghouse Electric Corp. plant on Sharpsville Avenue, Sharon. The plan is divided into three sections:
Shenango River sediment and riverbank cleanup: $3,180,000. The plan calls for the removal of 4,100 cubic yards of sediment from the river bottom below the Clark Street storm sewer outlet and another 30 cubic yards from the riverbank.Storm sewer cleanup: $149,000. About 600 feet of the Wishart Court storm sewer will be cleaned of contaminated sediment and debris.Groundwater monitoring: $2,385,000. Because no one is allowed to use the groundwater in or near the plant, removal of contaminated water isn't required. But the EPA is proposing 30-year monitoring to ensure the contamination doesn't worsen. Additional monitoring of wells will be required.
