The Mahoning County Civil Defense Office and Mahoning Chapter of the Red Cross conducts a surprise simulated disaster to test the Youngstown Hospital Association facilities. The "disaster" was an explosion-fire at a building next to the Red Cross in which 50 people were "injured," with 25 of them being sent to each of the YHA's hospitals.
Eleanor Roosevelt, the 78-year-old widow of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and niece of the 26th president, dies at her Manhattan apartment after an illness of two years. "One of the great ladies in the history of the country has passed from the scene," says President John F. Kennedy.

The "Y" College spirit is manifested on the college campus in what is billed as the first annual tug-of-war. One group of 13 fellows challenged any 15 other college men. The 13 were rewarded by being dragged through a pile of ashes by the larger group.
