Police seek gunman
LEAVITTSBURG -- Police are searching for a gunman who killed a 24-year-old Warren man.
Police Chief Thomas Rush said Bobby L. Hughley III was shot several times around 11 p.m. Thursday at the American Legion hall at 234 Bane.
Police said there were several people in the bar at the time, and anyone with information is asked to call the department at (330) 898-5588.
This is the first homicide in the township this year, Rush said.
Paying income taxes
McDONALD -- Council has granted "amnesty" to residents who have not paid their village income taxes.
Those who pay before Jan. 31 will not be charged the 1.5-percent-per-month penalty that accrues on unpaid taxes.
Installment payments can be arranged.

Negotiations scheduled
WARREN -- More negotiations will be scheduled among Warren Recycling Inc. and the state Environmental Protection Agency and attorney general's office.
Stephanie Beougher, a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office, said talks Thursday at the EPA office in Twinsburg didn't produce a settlement.
"Settlement negotiations will continue at a future time," she said. "There's been no date set."
The talks concern what the state agencies say are noncompliance issues at the company's Martin Luther King Avenue construction and demolition debris landfill.
Sentenced to prison
WARREN -- A 38-year-old city man who pleaded guilty to 20 counts of sexual battery has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Judge John Stuard sentenced David Harrington during a brief hearing Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Harrington was accused of having sexual contact with two teenage boys.
Before sentencing, members of Harrington's family told the judge they and Harrington were victims of child abuse when they were growing up.
Boil-water notice
BROOKFIELD -- Residents between 7451 Warren-Sharon Road and 7635 Warren-Sharon Road and those on Golf and Wintergreen drives should boil their water until further notice because of a waterline break on old state Route 82.
Seat on zoning panel
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees are accepting applications for a seat on the zoning commission.
Harlan Collier, a longtime member of the commission, who has also served on the Board of Zoning Appeals and was one of the original firemen in the township, has told trustees he will retire at the end of his term Dec. 31.

District strike looms
NEWTON FALLS -- With a strike of district support workers looming, the board of education will meet in special executive session at 9 a.m. Saturday in the board offices at the high school.
A contract negotiation session is set for 1 p.m. Sunday. If an agreement is not reached, the union representing bus drivers, cafeteria workers, secretaries and others will meet at 5 p.m. Sunday to decide if they will strike over wage and insurance issues.
Trustees to meet
CHAMPION -- Township trustees will meet in executive session at 5 p.m. Monday to discuss fire department personnel.
Minihorse donated
DEERFIELD -- A miniature horse has been donated by Pam Martin of Dalton to the Joyce and Tim Adams family, whose own tiny horse, Eddy, was killed.
Silverhawk, a 6-month-old stallion born May 11, will arrive Sunday. Eddy had been a pet to the Adams' 12 grandchildren. Eddy was stolen from a pasture Oct. 28 and later found beaten to death. To help find out who killed Eddy, donations have been coming in to offer a reward for the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.
Daughter-in-law Robin Adams said today that $9,200 has been collected so far. To contribute, call Robin Adams at (330) 547-8816. Anyone with information about the beating should contact the Animal Protective League of Portage County at (330) 296-4022.
