How they got there: In state semi-final matches, Mooney out-lasted Granville 2-1 while DeSales beat Kettering Alter 1-0 in a shoot-out.
Mooney scouting report: The Cardinals are in the state tournament for the first time ever. Mooney has out-scored its last 12 opponents 55-2 and owns a 15-game winning streak. The Cards scored 104 goals this year and permitted just 17, with 13 shutouts. The leading scorers are sophomore Kiki Willis (38 goals, 10 assists), senior Pat Walker (26 goals, 9 assists), senior Mark Seddon (12 goals, four assists) and senior Alex Simon (8 goals, 12 assists). Senior goalie Tim Reigrut has 13 shutouts this year and 23 over two seasons. Mooney is coached by Lenny Krispinsky (101-84-18).
St. Francis DeSales scouting report: In Centerville Tuesday in the state semifinal, the Stallions and Kettering Alter were locked in a scoreless tie for regular play and over a 20-minute overtime session. In a shoot-out, DeSales senior goalie Mike Coury stopped the first shot at him and the next two kicks sailed wide. Meanwhile Mike Seminerio, Erek Kozlowski and Dani Lopes scored for the Stallions in the shoot-out, putting DeSales in the championship match. DeSales lost to Cincinnati Turpin in the state semifinals on the same field in Centerville the last two years. The Stallions have been in the state tournament nine times, winning the championship three occasions (1997-92-86) and losing the title match in 1990. The Stallions opened the season with a 3-0-4 record and have won seven straight. DeSales is coached by Jason Ricci in his first year.
Notes: Mooney is not the first area team to play in the state tournament. In 1989 Canfield High, coached by Lee Frey, lost to St. Bernard Roger Bacon 4-0 in the Div. II championship match. Canfield (21-2-2) beat Bay Village Bay 2-1 in overtime in a semi-final game. Bay goalie Brad Friedel later played in the Olympics for the USA team.
How to get there: From Intersate 71 North, exit at Hudson Ave. Turn left onto Hudson Ave. and then the first light will be Silver Drive. Turn left onto Silver Drive and stay in the far right lane to Crew Stadium. All fans will enter through gate 5 and exit gate 7.
