Liberty man gets jailfor beating son, 6
GIRARD -- A Liberty father accused of severely beating his 6-year-old son will spend 10 days in the county jail.
Jerry E. Malcomson Jr., 28, of Naylor-Lloyd Road, pleaded no contest and was found guilty Wednesday by visiting municipal Judge Daniel P. Thomas of a charge of child endangering.
Malcomson will begin serving his time Monday. He was fined $100, placed on one year's probation and ordered to undergo anger-management counseling.
Charges of permitting child abuse and domestic violence were dismissed.
Malcomson was accused of beating his son, who lives in Niles. The boy has bipolar disorder and is a special-needs student.
Liberty police said employees at Washington Elementary School in Niles notified police when they saw the boy's bruised back Sept. 23.
His mother, Nanette McMahan of St. John Street, Niles, said she had given the boy to his father because she could no longer handle him.

Deliberations beginin stillbirth lawsuit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jurors began deliberating Wednesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, where a Columbiana couple is suing a doctor they say contributed to the stillbirth of their first son in July 1999.
Matthew and Sunny Barger are seeking unspecified damages from Dr. Robert McCluskey, saying he should not have used the drug Cytotec to induce labor.
They say the drug caused the woman to have repeated contractions that cut off the flow of blood and oxygen to the baby through the umbilical cord, causing his death.
McCluskey testified earlier this week the drug was prescribed by another doctor and he went along with it because the other doctor said it would be fine.
