Penguins playexhibition game
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team will kick off the 2002-03 season Saturday night with an exhibition game at Beeghly Center against the Upstate New York All-Stars at 7 p.m.
The contest is free to the public.
YSU head coach John Robic is beginning his fourth season and the Penguins are coming off their worst season in his three year stint. YSU was 5-23 last year and won only two games in their first season in the new Horizon League.
Robic says that he really doesn't have a starting lineup set as yet, but expects to play all 11 of his players Saturday to take a look at what he has.
The Penguins will open regular season play on Nov. 16 with they travel to Indiana State University. They play their home opener on Nov. 26 against Slippery Rock.

Ross TrimmerPAC's top player
NEW WILMINGTON -- Ross Trimmer, a freshman free safety for the Grove City College football team from Hickory High, has been named Presidents' Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Trimmer (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) was honored for his performance in the Wolverines' 12-7 win over Alfred last Saturday.
He had two pass interceptions that stopped Alfred's drives into Grove City territory, and spearheaded the defense that limited Alfred to 178 total yards.
Will Anderson (6-0, 230), a senior running back for Bethany College, was named PAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Anderson scored four touchdowns, rushed for 178 yards and caught two passes in the Bison's 34-7 win over Newport News Apprentice.
Makuch-Lott named for soccer play
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College men's soccer standout Anthony Makuch-Lott was named player of the week by the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Makuch-Lott, a freshman forward, posted four goals and an assist in three games last week, leading the Titans to a 3-0 week with shutout wins over PAC rival Bethany (4-0), Penn State-Behrend (3-0) and Pitt-Bradford (6-0).

BALTIMORE -- Cal Ripken Jr. is too busy to take on a front-office job with his former team, the Baltimore Orioles.
Ripken withdrew his name from the list of candidates to become the Orioles' vice president of baseball operations -- a title that is tantamount to general manager.
Canseco brothersplead guilty
MIAMI -- Jose Canseco and his twin brother pleaded guilty to charges they beat up two men in a nightclub fight a year ago, agreeing to 18 months' probation, 200 hours of community service and anger management classes.
Duke womenpreseason No. 1
NEW YORK -- Her team is No. 1, and so is Alana Beard. The Duke junior was the only player on all 44 ballots for The Associated Press preseason All-America team in women's basketball.
In addition to the 5-foot-11 Beard, the national media panel selected Vanderbilt's Chantelle Anderson (42 votes), Connecticut's Diana Taurasi (41), Mississippi State's LaToya Thomas (35), and Stanford's Nicole Powell (24).
Badger chargedin misdemeanor
MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin football player Anthony Davis, treated over the weekend for a stab wound allegedly inflicted by his girlfriend, was charged with a misdemeanor count of battery.
Police alleged that Davis, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season, punched his girlfriend in the face in an argument at his apartment early Sunday before he was stabbed in the leg.

Olympic timetables under review
ATHENS, Greece -- International Olympic Committee inspectors began a three-day review of Athens' preparations for the 2004 Summer Games today, with construction delays a top priority.
Denis Oswald, the chief IOC overseer, and about 40 IOC officials will be updated on all major aspects of the 2004 Olympics, including venue and press operations, transport, budget and the look of the city during the August 2004 games.
A major focus will be progress reports on construction delays at the main Olympic stadium and at the former Hellenikon airport complex.
Panova advancesat Volvo Open
PATTAYA, Thailand -- Top-seeded Tatiana Panova beat Maria Kirilenko 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the Volvo Women's Open second round. Panova, ranked No. 24, needed less than an hour to beat the 15-year-old Kirilenko, the U.S. Open junior champion.

BERLIN -- Former world biathlon champion Vadim Sashurin of Belarus has been banned for 15 months by the International Biathlon Union for failing a drug test.
Coach sacked
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Cesar Menotti, who led Argentina to its first World Cup soccer title in 1978, has been sacked as coach of floundering first-division club Rosario Central.
The decision to oust 64-year-old Menotti came after a unanimous vote Monday by directors of Central.
