WARREN -- A city police officer has pleaded innocent to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.
Charles List, a 13-year veteran of the Warren City Police Department, entered the pleas this morning before Judge Andrew Logan in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
If convicted of all charges, List could face a maximum of 15 years in prison.
Judge Logan set List's bond at $25,000 and a pretrial hearing for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Atty. Robert Shaker, who represents List, said his client will post the bond.
List, who is using a walker, is still recovering from injuries from the Sept. 13 crash. He said he's doing OK but declined to comment further.
A Trumbull County grand jury secretly indicted List last week. Shaker made arrangements with the court to have List appear today.
List, 34, of state Route 5, Kinsman, was off duty when the car he was driving crashed.
A back-seat passenger, Harry E. Lamson Jr., 50, of Larchmont N.E., Warren, died shortly afterward. Two other passengers were injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The accident
The patrol said List was eastbound on Tod Avenue around 7:45 p.m. when he crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck a pickup truck driven by Doug Reinard, 47, of McCleary-Jacoby Road, Bazetta.
Reinard, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated at a local hospital.
Neither List nor his three passengers were wearing seat belts, reports say.
The patrol has said List's blood alcohol level was over the legal limit of 0.10.
Police Chief John Mandopoulos could not be reached to say if List will be allowed to return to work while his case is pending. Department officials said List is on an unpaid medical leave and it is not known when or if he will return to work.
