NFL ROUNDUP News and notes

]Browns: Offensive tackle Roger Chanoine was released. Chanoine, 26, had spent his entire three-year career with the Browns, starting all 16 games at right tackle last season. He appeared in two games this season when tackle Ryan Tucker was injured, but otherwise did not play because of a minor knee sprain. The Browns, who are in their bye week, did not immediately fill the roster spot.
49ers: Fullback Terry Jackson agreed to a two-year contract extension, even though he won't play again this season because of a knee injury. Jackson, a fourth-year pro, is considered one of the NFL's top special teams players. He's also a backup to San Francisco fullback Fred Beasley and an emergency tailback. Jackson tore a ligament in his knee last month in the 49ers' victory over Seattle. He is still on crutches after surgery that will keep him out until next spring.
Bengals: Tight end Sean Brewer was placed on injured reserve with a knee problem, his latest setback in two injury-prone seasons. The Bengals signed tight end Chris Edmonds off their practice squad to replace Brewer, a 2001 third-round draft pick who has yet to catch a pass in an NFL game.
Also, defensive lineman Mario Monds was cleared to resume practice. Monds tore a ligament in his right knee last April while playing in NFL Europe. He's allowed to practice on a roster exemption for three weeks.
Lions: Running back Rafael Cooper was signed to the active roster and defensive back LaVar Glover was added to the practice squad. Cooper played for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe earlier this year and led the league with 10 touchdowns.
Dolphins: With five snaps under his belt, third-stringer Sage Rosenfels is Miami's most experienced healthy quarterback, and he may make his first NFL start by default Sunday against the Jets. Ray Lucas is questionable because he bruised his right shoulder during the second quarter of Monday night's 24-10 loss at Green Bay. An MRI exam of Lucas' shoulder showed no tears or broken bones, and it's uncertain whether he'll be able to practice this week. The only other quarterback on the roster is Dave Dickenson, who has never played an NFL game.
Also, reserve defensive back Ray Green, who dislocated his right elbow against the Packers, was placed on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season. He won't require surgery. Left tackle Mark Dixon, who has missed the past four games with a sprained left ankle, is expected to return for Sunday.
Saints: Cornerback Dale Carter reported to practice, one day after the NFL ended his suspension for violating its substance abuse policy. Carter, who had to sit out the 2000 season for substance abuse, failed another test and was suspended indefinitely in July, only months after signing a seven-year, $28 million contract with the Saints.
Cowboys: Offensive lineman Jeremy McKinney has undergone a heart procedure to correct a narrowing of an artery. McKinney, 26, played Sunday in Detroit, but felt shortness of breath after flying home. The 6-foot-6, 301-pound McKinney checked himself into an emergency room. Tests Monday revealed some narrowing of an artery. He had an angioplasty procedure, to clear up the condition. Doctors said he should be released from the hospital by the end of the week.
Rams: Linebacker Hakim Akbar was signed. He spent this year's training camp with the expansion Houston Texans and played on special teams for New England in six of the Patriots' first nine games last season. He then went on injured reserve in November after being in an auto accident.
Colts: Autry Denson was signed to bolster Indianapolis' injury-depleted corps of running backs. Edgerrin James and backup Ricky Williams are out with hamstring injuries, and Jim Finn wasn't effective after a mild concussion early in Sunday's loss to Tennessee.
