Knife found at school
YOUNGSTOWN -- The smell of suspected marijuana caused the principal at Chaney High School to have a student turn his pockets inside out. The search Tuesday turned up a Swiss Army-type knife. The 14-year-old Brentwood Avenue boy was taken to the juvenile justice center on a charge of illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon onto school property.
Robbery inside car
YOUNGSTOWN -- John A. Hill, 35, of Glenwood Avenue was arrested Tuesday night on charges of abduction and robbery. He is accused of jumping into a car on Hopkins Road, grabbing inside the driver's pockets and taking $5. Hill then ordered the driver to take him to Glenwood and the driver complied, police said. Before leaving the car, Hill took roughly $5 in loose change from the console, reports show. Police reported they had seen Hill hanging around the Hopkins Road area, stopping cars and asking for money, and went looking for him. They found him at home and had the victim brought to the house. The victim then identified Hill as the suspect.

Acquitted in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County Common Pleas jury acquitted Larry McClinton, 45, of Kendis Circle on Tuesday of two counts of felonious assault stemming from a July shooting. McClinton, who has been jailed since the July 6 shooting, was to be released after the verdict, said his attorney, Mark Lavelle of New Middletown. McClinton had been accused of shooting Craig Owens, 20, of Bassett Lane in the arm and of shooting at Anthony Tensley, 22, of Kendis Circle. Tensley was not injured. Assistant Prosecutor Robert J. Andrews said McClinton fired five shots at the men over a dispute that started when one of the men sat on the car of McClinton's girlfriend.
Inmate's appeal denied
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 45-year-old man serving a prison term of 15 years to life has lost an appeal that would have moved up his next parole hearing date. Karl Wright pleaded guilty in 1980 to killing gas-station attendant Edward Ellis during a botched robbery at the Star Service Station in Youngstown. He had argued that terms of his plea bargain had been violated because he was improperly assessed by the state Adult Parole Authority, resulting in an extension of his sentence. A Mahoning County Common Pleas judge had dismissed the complaint at the county level. Wright appealed to the 7th District Court of Appeals, which upheld the county court ruling Tuesday. Wright is eligible for parole in June 2004.
