Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. Volunteer help is needed for these agencies:
Central Day Care: People needed to help with children's story time daily at 3 p.m.
Davis Elementary School, Austintown: Volunteers needed to tutor pupils one on one. A person also is needed to work with a Spanish-speaking child.
First Night, Youngstown: People needed to help with the annual downtown celebration in a variety of jobs and times.
Grace Place, Youngstown: Volunteers needed to work the Thank You Store from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., two shifts, Monday through Friday.
Hope House: People needed in a variety of areas and child care. A background check is required.
Junior Achievement: People needed to help in area schools for all grades.
Market Street School, Boardman: Tutors needed for one-on-one sessions with children in grades kindergarten through second.
OSHIP: There will be a refresher course for current volunteers interested in becoming recertified. Contact Bill Friend at (800) 686-1578.
Protestant Family Services: Receptionists needed Monday through Friday for three-hours shifts. Volunteers also will be needed in December to help bag food.
RSVP: The program needs people to be team leaders in organizing mailings, putting projects together, following up on assignments and assisting with developing community projects.
Salvation Army: People needed to serve as bell ringers from Nov. 11 to Dec. 24. Shifts are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. mainly in Boardman locations. The SA also is looking for people with musical talents.
Second Harvest Foodbank, Youngstown: Volunteers needed to sort and box food in the food bank warehouse from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Volunteer Service to Seniors: People needed to provide grocery shopping services, transportation and to serve as caregivers. Orientation and training provided Nov. 13-14. Call the Volunteers Services Agency for training times.
