Local students Merit Scholar semifinalists
Three students from Canfield High School and one from the Mercer Area Junior-Senior High School were named semifinalists in the 48th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The four teens join 17 other high school seniors from schools in the region who were named semifinalists. Their names were inadvertently omitted from an item in last Sunday's Vindicator.
The additional semifinalists are Colin E. Campbell, Nicholas R. Frankle and Louise M. Popio of Canfield High School; and Leah C. Acker of Mercer Area Junior-Senior High School.
An elite group
The local seniors are among 16,000 students nationwide to be named semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of the nation's high school seniors.
Semifinalists were chosen based on their scores on the 2001 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. They now have the opportunity to compete for about 8,000 scholarships worth $30 million.
