This is the time of year when many people plant trees and shrubs, but it can be difficult to imagine a plant in the landscape when it's barren of leaves and its blossoms are only a memory. A new series of books titled "The Woody Plant" can help make that mental picture a little clearer. The series has three books -- "Trees and Shrubs for Flowers," "Trees and Shrubs for Foliage" and "Trees and Shrubs for Fragrance." All were written by British horticulturist Glyn Church, with photography by Pat Greenfield. The format of the books is simple, just information and photos of trees and shrubs that fit their titles' description and are appropriate for growing in North America. Entries include a description of the plant -- most enlivened with Church's opinion -- as well as information on size, hardiness zone and special requirements.
The series is published by Firefly Books. Each volume sells for $24.95 in paperback and $35 in hardcover.
