Sigourney Weaver to receive top award from magazine
NEW YORK (AP) -- Actress Sigourney Weaver is getting the top honor at Glamour's Women of the Year awards because, according to the magazine's editor in chief, she fulfills both her on- and off-screen roles with strength, dignity and courage.
Cindi Leive says that Weaver is recognized as a strong force in Hollywood who influences how female characters are portrayed. "She was the strong woman action hero before there were strong women action heroes," she says.
Weaver selected Bebe Neuwirth to present her with the Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony at Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum.
Other awards
Other women picked as winners of 2002 Glamour awards include Olympic gold medalist Kelly Clark, a snowboarder; actress Sarah Michelle Geller; Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Enron whistleblower Sherron Watkins.
Kate Spade is a winner because she has made stylish and practical accessories accessible to women across the country, explains Leive.
And "Today" anchor Katie Couric is getting her second award from Glamour. She's the Wow Woman, a previous winner whose recent accomplishments warrant new recognition, says Glamour.
