YOUNGSTOWN -- Local accountants participated in the second annual "Accounting for Kids Day" recently, visiting Manor Avenue School and Center Street School as part of a statewide effort to teach elementary and middle school pupils how math skills can open the door to a career in business and finance. The program was sponsored by the Ohio Society of CPAs statewide with its Mahoning Valley Chapter locally. It reached about 100 schools across the state and out 400 CPAs in classrooms. The program began last year in Cincinnati.
Donation to MVCAP
WARREN -- The Mahoning Valley College Access Program has received a $2,500 contribution from Diane Sauer's Martin Chevrolet. The MVCAP, with offices in Warren and Youngstown, is a nonprofit, charitable organization focused on increasing the number of Valley students who continue their education beyond high school. The program was launched in 2001 by the Raymond John Wean Foundation of Warren.
Leadership conference
CANFIELD -- Lindsay Owen, a Canfield High School student, has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference from Tuesday through Nov. 10 in Washington, D.C. She is among 400 students from around the country who will attend the leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.
The theme of the conference is "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today" and participants will meet with leaders and newsmakers from government, media and international communities.
The event is sponsored by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Congressional Youth Leadership Council (www.cylc.org).

WARREN -- Two Trumbull County schools have been selected to participate in a federal program that focuses on distributing fruits and vegetables to pupils through the end of the school year. Among the 25 Ohio schools selected to pilot the program are Prospect Elementary and Intermediate School in Girard and Secrest Elementary School in Warren. The statewide program is funded by a $1.6 million U.S. Department of Agriculture grant and is administered by the Ohio Department of Education.
Schools are encouraged to incorporate nutrition lessons in curriculum and to distribute fruits and vegetables during class, between classes, at free breakfast programs and in after-school care programs.
Mount Union chairman
ALLIANCE -- Sylvester Green, a 1964 Mount Union College graduate, has been named chairman of the college's board of trustees.
Green is CEO and chairman of e2Value Inc., a Web-based property valuation company. He recently retired as managing director and executive vice president of Chubb & amp; Son Inc., a global property and casualty company where he had worked 36 years. He serves on the board of Fairfield University and has served as an advisory board member for Florida A & amp;M University and Emory Business School. Green also serves as chairman of the board for INROADS, and is past board chairman of the United Way of Westchester, the Westchester County Urban League, the Urban Family Institute and INROADS New York City. He has received several community service awards.
He replaces Atty. Fred J. Haupt, who served as chairman for 10 years.
