Police probe disputeinvolving 2 brothers
NILES -- Police are still investigating a domestic dispute that ended with two brothers' sustaining gunshot wounds.
According to police, John J. Whelchel, 41, and James E. Whelchel, 47, both of 723 Ann St., began fighting about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when John used a knife to cut James on the left wrist.
James "then went upstairs, got a gun, came back down and shot John," said Niles Police Capt. Charles Wilson.
John, who was discharged Thursday from St. Elizabeth Health Center, was shot on his right side, in the abdomen area, Wilson said.
"There was a scuffle over the gun and it went off again, and James was shot in the hand," Wilson said. The bullet exited through James' wrist, he added. James was originally taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center, but was later moved to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center, where he remains in serious condition.
When police were called about 10:50 p.m. Wednesday, they arrived to find both men lying in the front yard bleeding.
Wilson said police are still questioning the men and no charges have been filed.
