Vocal Hall concertmoves to Cafaro Field
SHARON, Pa. -- The concert for this year's Vocal Group Hall of Fame & amp; Museum induction ceremony won't be held in the Chestnut Avenue parking lot behind the hall. Tentative plans call for the event to be held Sept. 18 at Cafaro Field next to the Eastwood Mall in Niles. The concert, held in the Chestnut Avenue lot for the past two years, features many of the artists being inducted into the hall. The Lettermen, inducted last year, and The Marcels, to be inducted this year, are among those expected to perform at this year's show.
Seeking schools chief
SHARON, Pa. -- Sharon City School Board will be interviewing candidates for superintendent next week. The board has narrowed its list to seven, who will be interviewed Monday and Tuesday. The board has not released their names. Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV of Grove City, a quasi-government agency that provides educational services to public schools in Mercer, Lawrence and Butler counties, assisted Sharon in its search. The board voted in November not to renew the contract of Superintendent Richard Rossi when it expires June 30.
Vacant house destroyed
MERCER, Pa. -- Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a vacant house at 2649 Valley Road in Jefferson Township. Fire Chief Tom King said a state police fire marshal has been called in to investigate the blaze, which was discovered at 10:30 p.m. Thursday. King said the house was owned by a family named Foster and was being used only for storage of household materials. Mercer, Clark and Fredonia firefighters assisted Jefferson Township at the scene. There were no injuries.
Liquor-permit penalties
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Liquor Control Commission has penalized four West Side liquor permit holders for underage alcohol sales.
Little Gail's, 1544 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, received a 30-day license suspension for selling beer to an 18-year-old April 27, 2001, without checking identification. The bar also received a 10-day suspension or a $1,000 fine for after hours sales June 9, 2001.
Mahoning Wine Shoppe, 1681 Mahoning Ave., and Casaloma Gardens, 2843 Mahoning Ave., were each fined $800 for selling alcohol to an 18-year-old in April 2001 without checking identification.
Little Hunan Restaurant, 4748 Mahoning Ave., was fined $200 for selling alcohol to a 20-year-old Oct. 4, 2001. The employee checked identification, but made the sale anyway. The wine shop, Casaloma and Little Hunan had no previous liquor violations.
Lightning zaps power
YOUNGSTOWN -- Power was restored in about an hour after lightning caused a massive outage Thursday in parts of Youngstown and Boardman.
Paul Harkey, Ohio Edison area manager, said 11,000 customers lost power just after noon when lightning hit a transmission line in Lowellville. Four substations that feed into the Lowellville line were affected.
Harkey said a lightning strike downtown at 11:49 a.m. caused 525 customers to lose power for about three minutes, but WYTV Channel 33 was off the air for almost 90 minutes, an employee said.
Clerk of courts awarded
COLUMBUS -- Sarah Brown-Clark, Youngstown Municipal clerk of court, has received a professional certification award from the Ohio Association of Municipal Court Clerks, one of only 155 statewide.
Police pick up teen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old boy who a witness said tried to sell marijuana at St. Brendan's festival Thursday evening was picked up by police as he walked north on Glenellen Avenue near the West Side church. The Mahoning Avenue boy lifted his shirt for police and handed over a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana that had been hidden in his belt. The boy was issued a juvenile court summons for possession of marijuana.
Complaint, summons
YOUNGSTOWN -- A loud-music complaint sent police to the 1600 block of Erie Street on the South Side about 10 p.m. Thursday and resulted in a juvenile court summons for a 17-year-old Bryson Street boy on a charge of drug-abuse marijuana. Police said the boy had been standing by the car responsible for the loud music and identified the marijuana seen on the back seat as his.
