SALEM 85-year-old woman hits school bus

Police intend to ask the state again to order the motorist to retake her driver's license exam.

SALEM -- An 85-year-old Canfield woman charged with driving into a pedestrian months ago is now charged with hitting a school bus.
Helen Kenreigh, 85, of 485 S. Broad St., is to appear June 6 in Columbiana County Municipal Court on a stop sign violation, Salem police said today.
The charge is a fourth-degree misdemeanor bearing a maximum penalty of a 30-day jail sentence, a $250 fine and a driver's license suspension.
Police said Kenreigh, driving a minivan, failed to heed a stop sign at South Ellsworth and Wilson Street about 3:41 p.m. Tuesday.
Her vehicle collided with a Salem City School District bus.
The bus was carrying about five pupils, none of whom was injured, police said. Kenreigh was not seriously injured in the crash.
November accident
On Nov. 5, Kenreigh was driving her van at East State Street and South Lincoln Avenue when it struck George W.S. Hays, 47, director of the Salem Public Library.
Hays was on foot in the crosswalk when he was struck. The accident left him in serious condition at a Cleveland hospital. He has since recovered.
Kenreigh was cited by police in county municipal court for a traffic signal violation in that accident.
She was fined $30 and ordered to pay $53 in court costs.
After the November accident, police sent a notice to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles asking that Kenreigh be ordered to retake her driver's license test, Salem Police Lt. Don Beeson said today.
Whether she was instructed to take the test is unclear, Beeson said. But she had a valid license when Tuesday's crash occurred. After this week's accident, Beeson said the department intends to again ask the state to have Kenreigh take a driver's test.
