YOUNGSTOWN -- Baseball coach Mike Florak announced the signing of Ryan Vaughn of Boardman to a national letter of intent.
Vaughn, a catcher, has been a key in the success of Boardman's 2002 season, helping the Spartans to the regional tournament.

Spartans on radio
YOUNGSTOWN -- Clear Channel Radio Youngstown will broadcast the Boardman Spartans Division I regional baseball tournament game from Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton.
Jim Campbell will handle play-by-play and Denny Leibert will provide color commentary on 1390 WNIO.
The broadcast will be Friday at 4:45 p.m. and if the Spartans win the championship game will be carried at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Aaron Walkerpitches for Ga. Tech
ATLANTA, Ga. -- Sophomore Aaron Walker, an East Palestine native, pitched in two Atlantic Conference tournament games for Georgia Tech in St. Petersburg, Fla.
He threw one scoreless inning against Clemson and four innings against Florida State, allowing one run.
Georgia Tech (46-14) went 2-2 in the tournament and will host a NCAA regional starting Friday.
Soccer teamwins tournament
The SOI U-12 soccer team won the Circle City Classic soccer tournament in Tallmadge last weekend.
Tim Hutchinson (Canfield), Sam Ragan (Boardman) and Matt Zador (Warren) provided goals, while keeper Greg Pecorelli (Cortland) recorded two shutouts and two saves in a tournament deciding shootout.
Tevor Ragan (Boardman) and Chad Richards (Canfield) led the team scoring with four goals.
Anthony Grenga and Michael Presby (Boardman) and SOI team tourney MVP Mario Nigro (Canfield) held opponents to five goals.
The team won the event with a 3-1 shootout victory.
Mineral Ridgedefeats Ursuline
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mineral Ridge High softball team rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning in a 3-2 victory over Ursuline in a non-league game Tuesday.
The Rams (20-6) were paced by winning pitcher Kaili Gehring (5-2) who hit three singles, while teammates Sarah Gerberry, Christi Padovani and Katie Garland added two singles apiece.
Ali Vitello led the Irish with a pair of singles.

Sharks' doctorfaces charges
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The state medical board filed complaints against the San Jose Sharks' team doctor.
Following a 1 1/2-year probe, the board accused orthopedic surgeon Arthur J. Ting of allowing aides to act as doctors and writing illegal prescriptions, the San Jose Mercury News reported Tuesday. If the state attorney general upholds the charges from the Medical Board of California, Ting could face suspension or lose his license.
Caminiti claimsmany on steroids
NEW YORK -- Ken Caminiti, the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1996, says he won the award while on steroids and that at least half of major leaguers use the drugs.
In a Sports Illustrated report on steroids in baseball, Caminiti confirmed he used them the season he batted a career-high .326 with 40 home runs and 130 runs batted in.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Instant replay, part of the NHL and NFL for several years, might be used in the NBA as early as next season.
Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik said the league will make a proposal to the Competition Committee at a meeting in Chicago next week.

NEW YORK -- Arizona softball head coach Mike Candrea was selected to lead the U.S. national team for the next four years, and he will take the Americans to Athens in 2004 to try to earn a third consecutive Olympic gold medal.
