School levy recount
YOUNGSTOWN -- Poland schools' 3.9-mill five-year emergency levy will get an automatic recount Monday by the Mahoning County Board of Elections.
The official vote, certified today, has the levy losing 1,925-1,918.
Because the levy lost by one-half of 1 percent, it is permitted to have a free automatic recount.
Coin toss picks winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- A flip of a coin today determined who will serve as a Republican precinct committee member in Youngstown 7-D.
Raul Magallon and Miro C. Zuti finished with five votes each, according to the Mahoning County Board of Elections.
In case of a tie, a coin flip is held to determine the winner.
Neither candidate attended today's coin flip.
Nancy Brundage of the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown was appointed by the board to call heads or tails on behalf of Magallon, who is listed first by name on election tallies.
Brundage called tails, and it was heads.
335 drivers diverted
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department diverted 335 drivers into a DUI checkpoint conducted from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday on South Avenue, one quarter-mile north of U.S. Route 224.
Deputies arrested three people for driving under suspension and two for driving without a license and having equipment violations.
Four men were arrested on outstanding warrants.
Deputies issued 103 warnings for seat belt and equipment violations. An additional 22 drivers were charged with speeding.
One juvenile was charged with having an open container of beer in his car.
Beaver Crime Watch
NORTH LIMA -- This month's Beaver Township Crime Watch meeting will feature a presentation on poison safety for adults by Mary Ann Szelest of St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. today in the activity room at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road.
Burned while grilling
NILES -- A Gypsy Lane man was in stable condition this morning in a Cleveland hospital after being burned while grilling at home.
James Infante, no age available, was taken by helicopter to the hospital, firefighters said.
He was cooking on an outdoor grill at home and tried to change a broken valve on the propane tank.
He was burned by a flash fire, according to firefighters.
Infante's wife, Suntine, was burned when she tried to pull her husband away from the flames. She wasn't taken to the hospital.
Senior Picture Show
NILES -- Eastwood Mall will be the site of Senior Picture Show on June 7-8.
Several portrait studios from Trumbull and Mahoning counties will display information and answer questions on photos for graduations and other special events.

Free gunlocks
Wal-Mart stores in Austintown and East Liverpool are taking part in a statewide campaign to distribute 50,000 gunlocks free to Ohio gun owners.
The giveaway will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Project Homesafe is an effort to promote firearm safety and education. Local law enforcement will assist with Saturday's distribution and will offer instruction on how to properly use the lock.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation and a $5 million federal grant administered by the U.S. Department of Justice is funding the project.
Campaign office opens
AKRON -- Warren Davis, an independent candidate for the 17th Congressional District seat, was to open campaign headquarters today at 600 Canton Road in Akron.
Davis, regional director of the United Auto Workers, is among four candidates running for the congressional district seat that includes portions of Mahoning, Trumbull, Portage and Summit counties.
Charges in standoff
YOUNGSTOWN -- Charges have been filed against James E. Martin Sr. of Lansdowne Boulevard, who police say held his girlfriend at knifepoint for several hours in the basement of her Roslyn Avenue apartment Thursday.
Her two children were able to escape before police arrived.
Martin, 48, is charged with two counts of abduction and one count each of kidnapping, felonious assault and assault.
Police called in hostage negotiators and then used a "flash back" device to divert Martin's attention and end the standoff.
He was hospitalized for minor burns caused by the device.
