PREP SOFTBALL Lowellville wins first tourney game



Southington defeated Newbury in a Division IV sectional.
SEBRING -- The Lowellville High softball team won its first tournament game in school history, defeating Sebring 4-3 Friday in a Division IV sectional semifinal.
Katie Gulling had two hits and Julie Peterson added two RBIs for Lowellville. Sebring committed eight errors.
Thursday, the Rockets will play the winner of Monday's Southern Local-Western Reserve game.
Southington 5, Newbury 3: SOUTHINGTON -- Senior Lindsay Byer (7-5) struck out eight batters and walked five in a three-hitter as the Wildcats (11-7) won their Div. IV sectional game.
Freshman Brittanie Gillium had a double and triple for second-seeded Southington, which plays a doubleheader at home today against Fairport.
Southington's next tournament game is Thursday at 4:30 at Bloomfield for a sectional championship.
Regular season
Poland 2, North Allegheny 1: NORTH ALLEGHENY -- Aslyne Rodriguez hit a two-run single in the sixth inning as Poland beat North Allegheny.
Poland's Sarah Knill had five strikeouts -- including the last batter of the game when the tying run was in scoring position.
Emily Patton, Kristy Gaudiose and Steffi Graf each had a bunt single in the sixth inning. Graf also had a double for the Bulldogs (16-5).
North Allegheny fell to 17-3.
Hubbard 6, Springfield 2: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Eagles had 13 singles, some of which were slowed by the wind.
Senior Jamie Rigby had three hits as the Eagles won a regular-season pickup game.
Sophomore Lynle Cornell, junior Colleen Sullivan and senior Linda Huff had two hits for Hubbard (11-5). Senior pitcher Lisa Yount (10-3) had three strikeouts.
The Eagles' next game is at Champion on Monday.
Ashley Platt had two hits for Springfield (15-9).
South Range 7, Ursuline 2: YOUNGSTOWN -- Jenn Toth (12-4) fired a three-hitter struck out three and walked only one batter to pick up the win.
Crystal Schuler of the Raiders (18-5) hit a triple and single, scored twice and stole a base. Jen Ridgeway hit a pair of singles, drove in a run and scored once.
Staci Ziobert hit two singles for the Irish (7-12).
West Branch 14, Canton South 0: CANTON -- Nikki Pierce tossed a two-hit shutout as West Branch (13-10) routed Canton South.
Deidre Snively had five hits and four RBIs for the Warriors.
