Guard leaves airport
VIENNA -- The National Guard troops assigned to Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport turned over their responsibilities to local authorities at 8 a.m. today.
Eight guardsmen from four units provided security at checkpoints where passengers are searched before boarding planes, said Tom Nolan, director of aviation.
The checkpoints will now be watched by an armed officer of the Vienna Police Department, working under contract with the board that manages the airport.
Charges in assault
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A 40-year-old New Castle man is in Lawrence County Jail today after failing to post $20,000 bail on charges of burglary, attempted rape and aggravated assault.
Pennsylvania State Police said a 30-year-old woman told police a man pushed his way into her house on Orchard Terrace at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. The intruder was unknown to the victim, police said.
Police said the woman was strangled and knocked to the floor, and the suspect attempted to rip off her clothing. The woman fought back and the man ran away, they said.
Police said the woman was later brought to state police barracks, where she identified her attacker.
Camp Fire schedule
CANFIELD -- Camp Fire USA Northeast Ohio Council's summer day camp will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday on the following dates:
U June 24-28, Streetsboro Park, Streetsboro.
U July 22-26 Swine Creek Reservation, Middlefield.
U Aug. 5-9 Camp Stambaugh, Canfield.
Activities include speakers, crafts, games and other hands-on activities. The day camp is open to children in first through sixth grades.
Adult volunteers are needed to serve as counselors.

Drive-by shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bobby Floyd told police he was shot in the abdomen while walking alone on North Garland Avenue near Hill Street about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
Floyd, 37, of Atkinson Avenue, was in critical condition today in Forum Northside Medical Center. He was unable to provide police with details about who fired at him from a car.
Second burglary
YOUNGSTOWN -- For the second time this week, a woman who lives in the 2100 block of Kirk Road called police to report a burglary at her home.
On Thursday, she reported someone smashed out a side entrance door and stole a TV and VCR.
On Tuesday, she reported a side entrance door was damaged to gain entry and $300 to $400 in change was taken from a cookie jar.
Shooting victim
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a 28-year-old man after he took a shooting victim to the hospital and allowed police to search his car.
While police were searching for evidence related to the shooting, they found suspected marijuana.
According to police reports, the man was on Scott Street around 12:38 a.m. Thursday when he learned that someone had been shot. He recognized the 35-year-old man who suffered wounds to both hands and drove him to St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
The victim told police he did not know who shot him.
Both the victim and the man arrested gave police home addresses in the 700 block of Fairmont.
Sentenced in shooting
MERCER, Pa. -- A Warren, Ohio, man will serve 12 to 30 months in prison for a drive-by shooting in February.
Judge Michael Wherry of Mercer County Common Pleas Court sentenced Donnell Stubbs, 20, for aggravated assault, a felony.
The judge also ordered Stubbs to pay costs for carrying firearms without a license, also a felony. Judge Wherry said Stubbs was eligible for the state's boot camp program.
After an argument with two men, Stubbs fired a handgun several times from a car at the men, who were in another car in the 200 block of Roemer Boulevard, Farrell. No one was injured.
Job fair for veterans
SHARON, Pa. -- A veteran job fair will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the American Legion, 1395 E. State St., to help veterans with employment and training opportunities.
Local employers, veterans organizations, service officers and social service agencies will attend.
A national service officer from the Disabled American Veterans will assist veterans with claims.
Veterans must bring proof of military service and copies of their r & eacute;sum & eacute;s.
