John Vogelearns scholarship
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State sports information department announced that John Vogel of Mineral Ridge High is the recipient of the Chuck Perazich Sports Information Scholarship.
"John is a very talented young man and we look forward to having him work in our office," said sports information director Trevor Parks. "We want him to enjoy his experience at Youngstown State and are excited to have him on board."
Vogel will handle media relations duties for the cross country, track and field, swimming and diving and baseball programs. He will also assist at home football and basketball games.
Gina Amero, a Boardman native, who has been the recipient of the scholarship for the past four years.
The scholarship is named for Chuck Perazich who was the first sports information director at YSU and had a celebrated sports journalism career at The Vindicator.
Softball
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State sophomore Amanda Berry was named to the second team on the All-Horizon League baseball all-star squad.
She was a second-team All-Mid Continent Conference selection in 2001.
Berry, who ranked 11th in the league, led the Penguins with a .328 batting average. She was second in triples with three and was tied for sixth in doubles with 10.
Berry was tied for ninth in the Horizon League with a .484 slugging percentage.

Johnson memberof Rhein Fire
Former Youngstown State linebacker Tim Johnson and the Rhein Fire (3-1) will play host to the Frankfurt Galaxy (4-0) in a NFL Europe League contest televised live on the Fox Sports network Saturday at 1 p.m.
Johnson, who is a member of the Chicago Bears practice squad, is second for the Fire through three games with 19 total tackles, three pass breakups and one interception.

NELSON -- Bill Pintaric Jr. of Liberty won the GT4 class each day and finished first overall among a field of 30 cars during the two-day Sports Car Club of America/Steel Cities Region-sponsored race at Nelson Ledges Road Course recently.
Driving a Camaro, Csaba Bujdoso of Canfield won both days in A sedan while Bill Kamser of Berlin Center won the Sports2000 class Sunday.
Ray Boniface of Poland finished third in ITS on Saturday.
Nick Doinoff of Boardman placed fourth in ITB both days while Jim Tobor of Cortland, racing in SpecRacer Ford, was runner-up in Saturday's race and fourth on Sunday. Chase Navarre of Boardman placed eighth in Formula Vee both days.
The race was the first of eight to be held on weekends this summer.

SEATTLE -- Hoping to defuse the controversy over the banning of "Yankees Suck" shirts, the Seattle Mariners are allowing fans to wear the T-shirts.
The Mariners generated national news stories last month by asking fans at Safeco Field to remove the shirts or turn them inside out during a series against New York.
