CLEVELAND -- U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. of Poland, D-17th, has until May 17 to decide if he will continue to be his own lawyer.
U.S. District Judge Lesley Brooks Wells said in an order filed Wednesday that he must let her know by then if he wishes to continue to represent himself or have lawyers from Columbus who have filed motions on his behalf.
The government does not object to Traficant's having lawyers but does object to a "hybrid" situation where he also continues as his own lawyer.
Traficant is seeking a new trial. A jury found him guilty last month of racketeering and tax crimes.
His sentencing is June 27.
