Woman sues doctor
WARREN -- A McMyler N.W. woman has filed a lawsuit in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court against a local doctor, contending he sexually assaulted her.
She is seeking in excess of $375,000 in damages.
The defendant could not be reached. A woman answering the telephone at his North Road office said the doctor had no comment.
The suit states the McMyler N.W. woman was a patient from October 2000 to September 2001, during which the doctor "willfully, wantonly and negligently sexually assaulted" her on several occasions.
Prison sentence
WARREN -- A 24-year-old Willow Drive S.E. man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison on six counts of felonious assault.
A Trumbull County Common Pleas jury convicted Victor C. Brown last month.
Brown opened fire Aug. 27, 2000, while driving by The Drink, a Niles bar. No one was hurt.
School to move
HOWLAND -- Word of Life Christian Academy will reopen in the fall in facilities provided by Howland First Baptist Church on East Market Street.
The school will provide all its current classes and programs for kindergarten through seventh grade, according to school board member and spokesman Bob Malito.
The school is moving from Believer's Christian Fellowship Church, where it has been for 15 years, because that church needs the classroom space for expansion of its youth ministry program.
Guilty of tax violation
CLEVELAND -- Robert Coakley of Warren has agreed to plead guilty to a one-count information that charges him with filing a false tax return for 1996, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The charge against Coakley, 38, of Pierce Road, is linked to a long-term investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Trumbull County Drug Task Force that led to a June 2001 federal indictment charging him and others with conspiring to distribute marijuana.
Coakley has pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing in the drug case.
Ex-teacher guilty
EAST PALESTINE -- A former Salem teacher has been found guilty of disorderly conduct and fined $100.
John McKee, 49, of Salem, entered a no-contest plea Tuesday in Columbiana County Municipal Court.
He was accused off throwing chalk at a ninth-grader Nov. 2 and hitting the boy in the head. McKee lost his job with Salem schools.
Charged in stabbing
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old Girard woman was to be arraigned today on a felonious assault charge. She is accused of stabbing a 17-year-old Lora Avenue boy outside Western Reserve Transit Authority's Federal Street station downtown Tuesday.
According to police reports, the two were arguing around 12:25 p.m. when the woman pulled a knife. A security officer told police he saw the woman holding the boy in a headlock as she stabbed him three times.
The boy was in stable condition Tuesday evening.
Money allocation
AUSTINTOWN -- A decision on how $1.4 million in Clean Ohio Conservation Fund money will be allocated to local projects has been postponed.
The District 6 Natural Resource Assistance Council met Tuesday to determine how the funds would be distributed. Eight local groups have submitted requests.
The council, made up of local officials and community leaders, did not reach a decision during the meeting.
Kim Mascarella, environmental planner at the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, said the group has requested further documentation. Allocations should be decided by May 30.
Requesting project funds are the Mahoning River Consortium, Mill Creek MetroParks, Austintown Parks Department, Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District, the city of Warren, Campbell schools, Trumbull County and Howland Township.
