Cochran visits for YSU event

YOUNGSTOWN -- Former Youngstown State University President Leslie Cochran helped celebrate the induction of the 10th class of University Scholars today.
Cochran, who retired from YSU in July 2000 and now lives in North Carolina, instituted the University Scholars program shortly after he took YSU's presidency in 1992. When Cochran retired, YSU trustees renamed the program the Leslie H. Cochran University Scholars.
The program provides full tuition, room and board scholarships to 45 top high school graduates from throughout the Youngstown region.
The scholarships are renewable for up to four years as long as students maintain a 3.5 grade average, complete the requirements of the university's Honors Program and donate 60 hours of service to the Youngstown community. This year's class includes 18 high school valedictorians and three salutatorians.
