SOFTBALL ROUNDUP Fitch upsets Stow 3-1 in Division I sectional tourney



Brianna Ozias pitched a four-hitter for the Falcons against the second-seeded Bulldogs.
STOW -- Catcher Joanna Fergus doubled in the first run of the game in the fourth inning and Austintown Fitch High went on to stun second-seeded Stow 3-1 in a Division I sectional softball tournament game Monday.
Jen Purnell added two singles for the Falcons (10-14) who rode a four-hitter by Brianna Ozias (8-8).
After the Bulldogs (14-5) scored in the fifth to cut the deficit in half, Fitch scored an insurance run in the sixth.
Fitch will play host to Warren Harding next Monday at 4:30 p.m. in a sectional final.
Mooney 2, Howland 1: YOUNGSTOWN -- With the game knotted at 1-all and two out in the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Sara Wright doubled in pinch-runner Stephanie Fabian from second base for the Cardinals (15-5). Wright had two hits.
Amy Cornicelli had two hits for the Tigers (13-9), but Gina Brunetti threw her out at the plate trying to score from second on a single to end the game.
Ursuline 4, Chaney 0: YOUNGSTOWN -- Freshman Maureen Cearfoss pitched a three-hitter and had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for the Irish (6-9).
Jenna Loto had two hits for Chaney.
West Branch 1, Salem 0 (8 innings): SALEM -- Angela Meier had two hits to lead West Branch (12-10).
Krystal Finley had two hits for Salem.
Springfield 4, Mathews 3: VIENNA -- Jessica Snyder singled home the first Tiger run and Ashley Platt and Lindsay Johnson each had RBI singles in the sixth.
Springfield (15-8, 10-3) is tied with South Range for the Inter-County League lead.
Jennifer Mine singled twice for the Mustangs (8-8, 6-7) who trailed 4-0 to start the last of the sixth.
South Range 10, McDonald 0: MCDONALD -- Jenn Toth (10-4) had three hits and tossed a complete game three-hitter, striking out eight and walking one for South Range (16-5, 10-3 ICL).
Kelly Skrinyer, Amy Algeo, Crystal Schuler and Kelly James each added two hits for the Raiders.
McDonald dropped to 5-10, 2-10.
Mineral Ridge 4, Jackson-Milton 3: MINERAL RIDGE -- In the bottom of the 10th, Mineral Ridge's Ashley Alt scored on a double by Katie Olive and Christi Padovani later singled to score Oliver for the game-winner.
Holly Mills had three hits for Mineral Ridge (14-6, 8-5 ICL). Olive, Padovani and Kaili Gehring each had two hits in the win.
Corey Velk had three hits and Jessica Wilmoth and Jayne Fenton each added two hits for Jackson-Milton (8-8, 5-8).
Champion 6-5, Brookfield 0-1: BROOKFIELD -- Stephanie Weaver pitched a five-inning one-hitter for Champion in the first game.
Jessica Carpenter each had two hits for the Golden Flashes.
Michelle Canatsey had two hits for Champion (11-8) in the second game.
