YOUNGSTOWN -- More than 20 rounds were fired at a 1992 Lexus in which two little boys, ages 1 and 7, rode in the back seat. No one was injured Monday evening on the South Side.
The children's 24-year-old mother told police that gunfire erupted when she stopped for the traffic light on Oak Hill at Falls Avenue about 8 p.m. Her boyfriend, owner of the Lexus, was in the passenger seat. He refused to talk to police.
His girlfriend, of East Ravenwood Avenue, said the shots came from two men in a burgundy Lincoln headed east on Falls. The woman said the Lincoln drove off and she went home to call police. Officers found bullet holes in the front bumper and right quarter panel of the Lexus. Police collected 18 .40-caliber and five .44-caliber casings in the curb lane of Oak Hill at Falls.
Seventh DUI charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A traffic stop on the East Side resulted in William E. Evans' seventh DUI charge Monday night, reports show.
Aside from DUI, the 43-year-old Campbell man was cited for driving under court suspension, fictitious license plates, no seat belt and no license plate light.
Deputy Jim Touville said in his report that this charge represents Evans' third DUI in six years. The deputy said Evans did poorly on field sobriety tests and refused to have his blood alcohol content tested. Touville tried to stop Evans on McCartney Road about 11 p.m. but the man continued on, eventually pulling into his driveway on Cortland Avenue. The deputy collected from Evans' car a small cooler with three cans of beer on ice and two open beer cans.
Cafaro sentencing
CLEVELAND -- Federal prosecutors have asked that J.J. Cafaro of Liberty not be sentenced next month for his part in U.S. Rep. James A Traficant Jr.'s racketeering case. Instead, prosecutors ask that U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver Jr. reschedule the sentencing to mid-September.
Cafaro is needed to testify in July against one of his former employees, Richard E. Detore. Detore, a Virginia engineer, is accused of taking part with Cafaro in a scheme to bribe Traficant, of Poland, D-17th. The congressman was found innocent and will be sentenced June 27.
Burglar steals pistol
YOUNGSTOWN -- A burglar stole a 9mm Smith & amp; Wesson pistol loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition from a Cricket Drive home. The victim told police that his wife left home at 8:25 a.m. Monday. When she returned about 2 p.m., she discovered that the gun and a musical jewelry box with about $350 worth of jewelry were missing from a bedroom.
Golf course vandals
COITSVILLE -- Bedford Trails Golf Course on Bedford Road reported a theft and vandalism over the weekend to Coitsville police. Hole markings from Nos. 2 and 15 greens were stolen, and someone used a sharp object to carve a vulgar word into the green, said Coitsville Lt. Allan P. Morris. A smiling face also was drawn in the green.
Truck rolls; driver OK
LAKE MILTON -- An out-of-state truck driver who fell asleep on Interstate 76 just past midnight Monday was not injured when his vehicle rolled over, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
The commercial truck, traveling east, went off the left side of the road about 12:07 a.m. today, then turned over, the patrol said. The Kentucky man was cited for driving with impaired alertness.
YouthBuild conference
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two students from YouthBuild Mahoning County were selected to attend the recent National YouthBuild AmeriCorps conference in Washington, D.C.
Paul Sprauve and Tynisha Clark were picked to attend based on their leadership, good judgment and reliability displayed in the local nine-month program.
YouthBuild offers education, job training, leadership development and counseling to unemployed youths ages 18 to 24 through rehabilitation of dilapidated homes in the city.
