Elizabeth Haas, Thomas Backus III to be married

POLAND -- Robert and Denise Haas of Tuscany Estates are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Elizabeth Anne Haas of the same address, and Thomas H. Backus III, a son of Tom and Georgia Backus, all of Burgess Manor.
The couple will be married in an open ceremony to be held at 3:30 p.m. July 6 at Poland Presbyterian Church. Invitations will be issued for their evening reception at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman.
Miss Haas graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in education from Youngstown State University She is a substitute elementary teacher at Springfield Elementary School.
Mr. Backus, a special-education teacher at Reed Middle School in Hubbard, earned a bachelor's degree in Christian education and special education at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa.
The couple have accepted teaching positions at Tramway Elementary School in Sanford, N.C., where she will teach fourth grade and he will teach fifth grade. They also will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C., where she will pursue a master's in counseling and he will work toward a master's in administration.
