Volunteering
Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. WILL YOU HELP?
Volunteer help is needed for these agencies:
Animal Charity: People needed to assist with the nonprofit group's Wildlife Preservation Program or fund-raising activities. Preservation program activities include caring for orphaned animals, feeding the animals and cleaning cages. The minimum volunteer requirement is two hours a week. Orientation and training provided.
American Cancer Society: Volunteers needed immediately to assist with event planning, organization and implementation. A particular need is for volunteers with computer skills to perform data entry work.
Antonine Sisters' Adult Day Care: People needed to assist elderly participants in and out of a minibus and assist with crafts and bingo.
Camp Fire USA: Volunteers needed immediately to help with the children's Spring Environmental Camp, which runs through June 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily. Activities include a woods walk, pond life study and bird study. Volunteers may work as few or as many hours at their time permits.
Choffin Career & amp; Technical Center: People needed to participate in Project Opportunity, an adult basic literacy education program that teaches adults how to read. Volunteers will receive training from Project Opportunity in the use of the Laubach Way to Read Series in two workshop sessions. Those who complete the sessions will become certified tutor volunteers. The training is free.
Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church: Volunteers needed to participate in Pathway Partners, the church's after-school tutoring program from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Hope House Visitation Center: People needed immediately to assist staff in facilitating exchanges between families, monitoring visits, handling child-care duties, staffing the reception desk and performing minor clerical duties.
Mahoning County MRDD Special Olympics: Volunteers needed to help with the annual track and field meet June 8 at Austintown Fitch High School Stadium. Duties include directing, assisting and cheering on athletes at each event area and transporting the athletes to the awards stand. Orientation meeting begins at 9 a.m. June 8 and lunch will be provided.
National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon: People needed to assist with the upkeep of the shrine and various grounds activities such as painting picnic tables. Individuals also needed to assist with preparation and serving of fund-raising Friday fish dinners.
