Celebrating nurses
YOUNGSTOWN -- Forum Health is celebrating National Nurses Week, May 6-12, with a variety of activities and events to recognize its 1,800 nurses in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. "Nurses Care for America" is the theme for 2002 National Nurses Week.

Sports Safety Fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Child and Life Education Department at Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital offers a Sports Safety Fair for Kids from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in the parking lot of Tod Hospital, Gypsy Lane and Children's Drive. The event is in conjunction with National Safe Kids Week and EMS Week. Activities will include: Bike and helmet inspections; ambulance tours, water and fire safety information, as well as autograph signing by the Youngstown State University football team members. Recruiting volunteers
BOARDMAN -- Volunteer Services Agency, 5500 Market St., a United Way agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. VSA sponsors three programs: Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their skills in the community; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteers. No ridicule in school
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Medical Society Alliance, in cooperation with Warren City Schools, Trumbull County Schools, Notre Dame Schools of Warren, and Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic School, is offering a workshop, "Don't Laugh at Me," aimed at preventing verbal ridicule and harassment in schools. The programs will be at John F. Kennedy High School, 2550 Central Parkway S.W. The June 19 presentations will be for teachers (K-8), teaching assistants, principals, counselors and parents. The June 20 presentations will be for counselors, social workers, prevention professionals, chemical dependency workers, psychologists, nurses, child welfare workers, and care providers, clergy, judges, magistrates and law enforcement and probation officers. Mental Health Month
POLAND -- Families in Touch, the National Alliance of Mentally Ill of Mahoning Valley, and Help Hotline, will observe May as Mental Health Month with a program from 2 to 5 p.m. May 16 at Poland Library, 311 S. Main St. The featured speaker will be Dr. Suzanne Vogel-Scibilia, of Beaver, Pa., a practicing clinical psychiatrist who has had bipolar disorder since age 15. Dr. Vogel-Scibilia founded and operates an independent mental health clinic in Western Pennsylvania, is a clinical assistant professor at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and is on the medical faculty at the Medical Center in Beaver. Science fiction talk
HUDSON -- Five award-winning science fiction and fantasy authors will present a free panel discussion "Outta This World! The Craft and Career of Science Fiction," at 7 p.m. Monday at Hudson Library, 22 Aurora Street. The panel will include Mary Doria Russell, author of the best sellers "The Sparrow" and its sequel, "Children of God;" Maureen McHugh, author of four novels, including the recent "Nekropolis" and her first book," China Mountain Zhang," both named Editor's Choices by the New York Times; Geoffrey A. Landis, a NASA scientist who has won both the Hugo and Nebula awards plus a Locus Award for his new novel, "Mars Crossing"; Mary A. Turzillo, Nebula Award-winning author of "Mars Is No Place for Children"; and Steven Swiniarski, author of 14 science fiction and fantasy novels including his most recent, "Dragons of the Cuyahoga," published under his pen name, S. Andrew Swann. Each writer will talk about his craft and career, followed by questions from the moderator. A question-and-answer session with the audience will follow.
