CANFIELD -- The school district levy committee will present "A Celebration of Canfield Schools" at 7 p.m. Sunday on Village Green.
The event will feature the high school band, middle school jazz band, Canfield Players, Hilltop Grade 3 Famous Americans and C.H. Campbell Canfield Folk Dancers.
Bring lawn chairs. The event will be in the high school if it rains.
Funds to helpfire victims' families
YOUNGSTOWN -- Funds have been established to help families of recent fire victims.
For the family of Ranayja Clark, 4, and her sister, Rakaylah, 8, who died in a Thursday morning fire on Lucius Avenue, checks may be made payable to The Salvation Army and marked "Clark Family Fund" and sent to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 4327, Youngstown 44515.
For the family of John Chacon, 42, who was killed in a fire April 14 on Tod Lane, donations may be sent to the John Chacon Memorial Fund and Surviving Daughter at any Seven Seventeen Credit Union, the American Red Cross announced.
Hazardous wasteto be collected
CANFIELD -- The Recycling Division of Mahoning County will collect hazardous household waste May 11 at the Canfield Fairgrounds dairy barn area.
Paints, varnishes, thinners, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline and other fuels, propane tanks and lead acid batteries will be accepted.
Explosives, ammunition, tires and scrap metal will not be accepted.
People whose last names begin with A through F are asked to bring their items between 9 and 11 a.m.; G through N from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and O through Z from 1 to 3 p.m.
While supplies last, anyone bringing an old style mercury medical thermometer for recycling will receive a digital thermometer, with a limit of one per family.
Man shot in leg
CAMPBELL -- An 18-year-old city man was shot in the leg around 1:15 a.m. Friday as he was leaving a home on Delmar Avenue.
The man told police he and a 20-year-old Sixth Street man had started walking along Andrews Avenue heading to his home on Robinson.
He said that after he heard a single gunshot, he ran toward his companion's car in front of the home they'd just left. Then he heard two or three more shots and felt his leg go numb.
Both men said they didn't know where the shots came from or who might have fired at them.
Mosquito spraying
HOWLAND -- Alexander Pest Control will spray for mosquitoes here May 14-15 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. In case of rain, spraying will take place the following day.
Residents are asked to close windows and keep food and pets indoors during spraying.
Fund-raiser plannedfor injured teen
NILES -- A fund-raiser to help meet medical expenses for Seth Powell, 16, who suffered head injuries in a jet-ski accident, was to begin a noon today at Milo's Lounge, 5840 Youngstown-Warren Road.
Jim Mento, a family friend from Niles, said Powell was injured June 11 at Mosquito Reservoir when struck by a jet-ski while he was floating on an inner tube.
Powell, a Mineral Ridge High School junior, has undergone surgeries and more are needed. Funds have been exhausted.
Tickets are $10 and will feature roast pork, beef and chicken dinners, entertainment and a auction.
Man's wallet taken
CAMPBELL -- Police are searching for a man who robbed a 55-year-old Coitsville Road man of an undetermined amount of cash around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.
The victim told police that last week he gave a stranger a ride to a gas station after the stranger's car broke down in front of his home.
The same man returned Thursday and asked the victim for $10. The victim gave the man $5. Then, the man reached into the victim's pocket and took his wallet.
Certificationfor food giveaway
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The two-year certification for low-income city residents who receive free food through the county is scheduled next week at the armory on Frank Avenue.
Township and borough residents will be notified of their appointments later. Residents can register from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday.
Income guidelines will be available during registration.
