High school grant allows computer access from library

Students will be able to access recordings of science classes.

EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine High School students can research science projects via two new computers at East Palestine Memorial Public Library.
The students can use the computers to tap into the school district's science department curriculum Web links, said Greg Reeves, the schools' technology director.
The school district received a Technology Literacy Challenge grant last year. The grant is competitive and Reeves said he and other school officials wrote the grant for the science department.
Reeves said the grant can only be used for high school programs, and the school officials applied to use the money for the science department.
"We know not every child has a home computer and so this allows the students access after school," he said.
He said the grant is to be used to infuse multimedia into the science department. There are links to science resources to assist students in chemistry, biology and physics, he said.
Reeves is still working on the programming to include streaming video on the Web site. That will enable students to log on and tap into video recordings of classroom sessions they have missed.
They will be able to not only catch up on homework assignments, but also watch classroom discussions as well as a teacher's lecture and any notes, math problems or formulas a teacher may have written on the board during the class session.
Reeves said technology and science teachers can experiment with the new technology before new science curriculum is implemented and new science labs added.
He said using the grant in the science department exposes as many of the district's ninth- through 12th-grade students to the new technology as possible.
