YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Supreme Court has set Aug. 1 as the execution date for John J. Eley, 53, of Youngstown, who has been on Ohio's death row since August 1987. He was convicted in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery for killing Ihsam Aydah, 28, while robbing Sinjil Market on West Federal Street in 1986. The high court ruled Friday that all his avenues of appeal are exhausted and the execution will go forward. Eley is at the state penitentiary in Mansfield.
Route 45 ramp closed
CHAMPION -- The on-ramp from state Route 45 to state Route 5 is closed until Aug. 1 while repairs are made to Route 5, between West Market Street and the railroad bridges west of Elm Road. The Ohio Department of Transportation estimates the project will cost $9.8 million.
