COLUMBUS -- A late comeback by Youngstown State came up just short in a 6-5 loss to Ohio State Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Penguins (12-21) trailed 6-0 after four innings before scoring twice in the fifth and three times in the seventh to pull within one run at 6-5. YSU had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth.
The Buckeyes (26-13-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and scored three more times in the fourth.
With two outs in the fifth, Adam Cox doubled, advanced to third on Tim Stacey's single and scored on James Swearengen's RBI single. Kendall Schlabach, who had three hits in the game, knocked in Stacey to cut the deficit to 6-2.
In the seventh, Clint Ford doubled to open the inning. Adam Cox walked and pinch hitter Ty Furino delivered a sacrifice bunt. For beat a throw home on a grounder by Swearengen. Cox scored on a passed ball and Schlabach singled home Swearengen.
YSU begins a four-game series at Wright State on Friday night.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Adam Baumann, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward from Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Youngstown State.
Baumann was a first-team all-region and honorable mention Junior College All-American selection last year. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
At Yavapai he averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds a game. A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., he grabbed 655 rebounds, a record at Horizon High School.

SRU to playin championships
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock's women's tennis team will play for the NCAA Division II East Regional championship Saturday at 11 a.m. in Bloomsburg, Pa.
Slippery Rock will play the winner of Friday's match between Bloomsburg and Queens.
McDonald, Sebringto play at Cafaro NILES -- McDonald High's baseball team will play Sebring in a doubleheader Sunday at Cafaro Field starting at 1 p.m.
Tickets are priced at $3 each and are available in advance at McDonald High from Coach Dan Williams and at the McDonald Dairy Queen. Tickets also will be sold at the gate Sunday.
All proceeds will go to the McDonald team.
Browns Boosters' PPK
NILES -- Over 200 children participated in the Ohio Cleveland Browns Boosters Punt, Pass and Kick contest at the Creekside Dome.
Winning their age divisions were Nate Ganyard (11-12 division), Jay Williamson (9-10), Nathan Bucci (7-8) and Matthew Seitz (5-6).
Bethany coach, player take honors
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Bethany softball coach Jan Forsty shared Presidents' Athletic Conference coach of the year honors and Bison junior pitcher Rachael Schafer was named conference MVP for the second straight year.
Junior Amy Schafer, senior Raquel Burns, sophomore Janice Masters and senior Maureen Heckert were also named to the PAC first team. Senior Jen Kearney made second team.
New golf ball available
On Saturday, golfers can hit the Strata Tour Straight for the first time as part of a series of sampling days at more than 4,000 golf courses around the country.
Sampling locations take place at more than 100 courses and golf outlets throughout Ohio including: Golf Headquarters, Youngstown; Mill Creek Golf Course, Canfield; Yankee Run Golf Course, Brookfield; Avalon Lakes Golf Club, Warren, and Avalon South Golf Course, Warren. Other locations can be found by visiting stratagolf.com.
The Strata Tour Straight will be available in stores Monday. It's designed to reduce the side-spin that average golfers create at impact, which causes a slice or a hook.
