Karzmer fifth
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Youngstown State men's golf team finished fifth, led by a fifth-place finish by Jonah Karzmer at the Horizon League Men's Golf Championships held at Green Bay Country Club Monday and Tuesday.
YSU finished the three-round event with a 951 total. Detroit won the title with a 913 score.
Karzmer placed fifth with a 228 total including a 77 in the final round. Wright State's Jesse Hutchins won the event with a 214 score.
Other YSU scores included Shawn Wire in 15th with 237, Dan Traeger was 21st with 242, Brian Newell was 25th with 244 and Ryan Harmon was 31st with 251.
Softball twinbillpostponed
CANFIELD -- YSU's softball doubleheader on Tuesday at McCune Park was canceled. The games will be made up later in the season.

Warren golfersincrease lead
VIENNA -- Warren continued to roll in the Penn-Ohio Golf League over the weekend increasing its league leading total to 110. Sharon Hickory VFW remains second with 80 points.
In action at Candywood Golf Course, Warren's Bob Blaze was medalist with a one-under-par 71 while Youngstown's Rich Marlowe and Warren's John Scarsella each shot 72.
Youngstown Commissioner Ed Reese team is third in the standings with 54 and New Castle Del Mar is fourth with 42.
In the weekly best-ball event, the team on Blaze and Chris Cioffi took first place with a 66.
The next match will be May 11 at Mill Creek Golf Course at 9 a.m.
Extreme hasbowling lead
YOUNGSTOWN -- Every Extreme rolled 3,626 to take the lead as the 70th Youngstown City Bowling Tournament got under way recently.
Bruce Boyd and Ed Roscoe lead doubles with 1,530 while Brian Auman's 803 is tops in singles. Tim DeMain's 2,235 leads all-events.
The team event is at Bell-Wick Bowl and Holiday is hosting doubles and singles.
Valley Stingwins 5 games
HUBBARD -- Valley Sting Purple won the first five games in last weekend's Raging Thunder 14U fast-pitch softball tournament, but lost to the Brad-Mar Pines Cyclones of Pittsburgh in the championship game, 1-0.
Valley Sting won games over Brampton (Ontario) Blazers 2-0, Geauga Rockets 17-4, and 11-0, Mississauga (Ontario) Tigers 9-0 and Whitby (Ontario) Eagles 5-0.
Valley was led by pitcher Jaclyn Carpenter, who allowed no runs in two and one-half games and struck out 16 while pitcher Kasey Karr allowed only one run and had 24 strikeouts in three games.
Carpenter led the offense with seven hits while Trisha Dreslinski had six hits.

SALEM -- Canfield senior Lindsay Cobey set a school record in the discus Tuesday with a throw of 133-9 in a dual meet at Salem High School.
Trumbull teamwins bracket
WOOSTER -- The Trumbull County Blue Volleyball team won the 16-under bracket of the Wooster Tournament.
On the winning team are: Allison Kenney, Fitch High; Niki Herriott, East Palestine; Megan Oltmann and Felicia Resatar of Hubbard; and Mariel Montoney, Alissa Fisher and Lindsay Sapp of Crestview.

Aeros win
AKRON -- Jody Gerut hit a home run, Nate Grindell and Jon Hamilton each tripled and Victor Martinez doubled, all in Akron's fifth inning, as the Aeros beat the Altoona Curve 6-1 Tuesday night in the Eastern League.
Akron ran its winning streak to six straight games behind left-hander Billy Traber (5-1), who gave up one unearned run and five hits in seven innings.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- After nearly four hours of deliberations and telling a judge they were deadlocked at one point, jurors late Tuesday night acquitted two Penn State football players of all charges in an assault trial.
