WEBBY AWARDS 49ers nab nomination

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers' team Web site, www.49ers.com, has been nominated for a Webby Award in the sports category.
That makes the 49ers the first professional sports team to be nominated, a team spokesman said Tuesday night.
"It's a major honor," public relations director Kirk Reynolds said. "They're basically a Web version of the Academy Awards."
The Webby Awards honor the best 150 Web sites in 30 categories.
Nominees are selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.
The 49ers launched the site in July in partnership with EpicCycle Interactive.
Tom Hastings, Manager of Internet Services, oversees the site, which is updated daily.
The site supplies player, staff and cheerleader profiles, photos, statistics, schedules and interactive features.
"For a site that is less than a year old, we have come a long way in a relatively short period of time," Hastings said.
"We are excited about being recognized as one of the best."
Also nominated in the sports category are ESPN.com, 2002 FIFA World Cup soccer, Surfline and Backpaker.com.
The sixth annual Webby Awards program will take place June 18 at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
