RAY SWANSON | Keystoner Verrelli is back as Wilmington's football coach

Terry Verrelli's retirement lasted about as long as my New Year's resolution.
For those of you who may have missed it, Verrelli is back as head football coach of the Wilmington Greyhounds. A little over three months ago, Verrelli announced his retirement. That decision came after his team's defeat to Perry Traditional Academy of Pittsburgh in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs.
Greyhound fans, as well as yours truly, are glad Verrelli had a change of heart. He's a great guy to have around, and his tremendous football mind does not belong on a shelf somewhere collecting dust.
Good record: Verrelli, 54, has been in the coaching ranks for over 30 years now, racking up a highly-impressive record of 165-87-3. He has won five Mercer County and District 10 championships and two WPIAL crowns.
I've known Terry for a great many years now. He's Mr. Football through and through, a great coach who ranks very highly with his peers.
Apparently, the Greyhound coach was upset over a number of shortcomings in the program at Wilmington.
He believed the facilities had diminished considerably and that he was bearing a heavy load in attempting to carry out all aspects of the football program.
The Wilmington School Board has welcomed Verrelli back with open arms, stating they will upgrade the facilities as well as supply the Greyhound with another assistant coach. The board was very receptive to Verrelli's wishes. They know a good coach is hard to come by these days.
Going for gold: The ban has been lifted for Westminster College athletic teams, and this season the Titans will be eligible for Presidents' Athletic Conference titles and the Division III playoffs.
The football Titans will play a 10-game schedule this season, which includes a full slate against PAC teams Washington & amp; Jefferson, Bethany, Thiel College, Grove City College and Waynesburg College.
The Titans, who were not permitted to compete in league play due to changing division status, will operate once again under coach Jerry Schmitt. He has posted a record of 12-7 in his two seasons as Titan head coach.
PAC schedule: Westminster will play a full PAC schedule for the third straight year, beginning with an Oct. 5 meeting with Washington & amp; Jefferson, the defending PAC champion and an NCAA Div. III playoff participant.
Westminster plays home games against Bethany (Homecoming on Oct. 12) and Waynesburg (Nov. 16), while traveling to face PAC opponents Thiel (Oct. 19) and Grove City (Oct. 26).
The Titans will play five non-conference games, opening the season against NAIA power Walsh on Sept. 7, and traveling to face NCAA Div. II opponent Mansfield on Sept. 21.
Non-conference games against Div. III opponents include home games against Allegheny on Sept. 28 and Div. III playoff participant Thomas More (Ky.) on Nov. 9, along with a road contest at Frostburg State University (Md.) on Nov. 2.
