YOUNGSTOWN -- The annual membership campaign for the Youngstown chapter of the NAACP will begin at 4 p.m. April 14 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave.
The Rev. Lewis W. Macklin II, pastor of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church of Youngstown, is the program speaker.
The local branch of the NAACP is trying to increase its membership and is asking for support, primarily from the minority community.
Diabetes awareness
YOUNGSTOWN -- People can eat, drink and learn -- and get their fingers poked -- April 9 at the Youngstown Community Health Center during a Diabetes Days event. Beth Haddle, the center's research and development coordinator, said the event aims to increase awareness of diabetes.
From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the center, at 726 Wick Ave., will provide diabetic-friendly refreshments, free literature about diabetes and demonstrations on healthy ways to cook. Podiatry, blood-pressure and blood-sugar tests will be available. Haddle said the center also hopes to obtain equipment for vision screenings.
Disaster planning
YOUNGSTOWN -- The fourth annual Human Resource Conference will address business planning for disaster recovery from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 12 in the Ohio Room at Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center.
The Society for Human Resource Management, Western Reserve Chapter, will present two keynote speakers, Walter M. Duzzny and Corrie Fischel. Duzzny, director of the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency and Disaster Services, will present the morning address, "Is Your Company Prepared for a Disaster?" followed in the afternoon by "Religion in the Workplace" from Fischel, who has a law degree.
The Williamson College of Business, SHRM's Sigma Pi Alpha student chapter and the Partners for Workplace Diversity are co-sponsoring the event.
