Distraught, man threatens to jump
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania state constable pulled a man to safety who was threatening to jump from the ledge of the city parking garage.
City police said Constable Anthony Mangino was attempting to calm the man who stood on the edge of the three-story parking garage on Mercer Street from about 4:25 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The street was blocked as Mangino and Police Chief Victor Cubellis tried to get the man off the top level.
Police said the man appeared drunk and was apparently distraught over his treatment by county adult probation. Police are not identifying him, but said he is a white man in his 30s.
Mangino, who knew the man, apparently pulled him from the edge of the garage when the man became distracted and looked away, police said. The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital for mental evaluation, police said.
