Crash kills 81-year-old
NORTH JACKSON -- An 81-year-old man died in a three-vehicle crash caused by slick conditions on Mahoning Avenue west of Bailey Road, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. Charles H. Stunneck of Lake Milton was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his wife, Ruth Stunneck, around 9:55 a.m. Monday when she lost control on the snow-covered road and slid left of center. The vehicle was struck broadside by a second vehicle, which was rear-ended by a third. Ruth Stunneck was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she was in critical condition this morning, hospital personnel said. The driver of the third vehicle, a Berlin Center woman, was treated at St. Elizabeth's. The other driver, a Diamond man, was uninjured.
Slaying suspect
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a second man accused of involvement in a slaying last week. Armin D. Moore, 23, of Kendis Circle turned himself in at the Mahoning County jail at about 11:30 a.m. Monday. He was wanted on a warrant charging complicity to commit murder in the death of Stephen Shackleford. Shackleford, 29, was killed March 19 outside his McBride Street home. Eddie D. Bryant, 24, of Cohasset Drive was arrested after he turned himself in last week and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail on a murder charge. Outstanding warrants remain for Lorice Moore, 24, wanted on a charge of murder, and Calvin Moore, 30, wanted on a charge of complicity to commit murder.
Grenades in garage
YOUNGSTOWN -- The police bomb squad was called to a South Side address after a homeowner found two grenades in her garage, police reports show. The woman called police to her East Midlothian Boulevard home, in the 1900 block, at about 2 p.m. Monday after she found the grenades on a shelf while cleaning. Officers removed the grenades without problems.
Armed robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 24-year-old Westlake Terrace resident said he was in the parking lot of the complex when he was robbed at gunpoint. The man said that two men put a handgun to his head and demanded money and that he gave them $25.
Rottweiler bites girl
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city dog warden captured a loose Rottweiler that bit a 12-year-old girl near Taft Elementary School. The girl said she was walking home from Hillman Middle School and was behind Taft when the dog bit her left hand and she ran inside the school to escape. A city officer found the dog behind a home on East Avondale Avenue and fired three shots toward it when it attempted an attack. The animal was not killed, police said.
Equipment is stolen
CANFIELD -- Construction equipment worth about $5,300 was stolen during the weekend from a trailer on Montereale Drive. It was one of three construction-related thefts reported in Canfield in the past few days. Bolt cutters were used to remove locks from the trailer either Saturday night or Sunday morning. Mahoning County deputy sheriffs are investigating. Canfield police also received a report that a dishwasher, faucets, two sinks and two toilets were stolen from a construction site Monday on Laurel Hills Lane. In addition, police received a report that two sawhorses were stolen from a construction site Monday on Blueberry Hill Drive.
South Range schedule
NORTH LIMA -- South Range Board of Education approved the 2002-2003 school year schedule that has the pupils returning to class Sept. 4 and seniors graduating June 7.
Canfield school board
CANFIELD -- The Canfield school board will have a special meeting at 8 tonight to renew administrative contracts and to adopt a resolution that will allow the district to avoid a budget deficit in 2003. The meeting will be in the board meeting room at 100 Wadsworth St.
Widow sues driver
YOUNGSTOWN -- A widow is suing the driver of the tractor that collided with her husband's motorcycle. Tammy Ginnicks, of Warner Road N.E., Brookfield, is seeking in excess of $75,000 on behalf of all next of kin of her husband, Scott, who died July 20, 2001, as a result of the accident. The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court here says Ginnicks was attempting to pass the tractor on state Route 193 in Ashtabula County when it turned left in front of him. The suit contends the tractor driver, Raymond L. Richards, of Brandon, Fla., was negligent in making the turn.
